The BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize embodies Hong Kong’s vision of nurturing world-class science talent while cultivating forward-looking scientists, transforming it into an international innovation and technology hub. The prize honors research with direct application to people’s lives across Asia such as artificial intelligence/robotics/life/health, new materials/energy and advanced manufacturing; winners receive access to world-class HKUST research facilities for six months while working alongside local scientists as they hone cutting-edge research in a city known for producing many Nobel laureates.
This year’s prize attracted over 1,400 applications from all around the world; this represents the highest number ever seen since it first launched in 2024. Judges noted the high standard and variety of applicant work; all five finalists made significant contributions to their field of research as a whole.
Winners of the Hongkong Prize not only gain access to top-class research facilities at HKUST but can also expand their networks with international experts in their research fields and expand them. Doing this helps further their careers and connect them with potential collaborators as well as secure additional funding for their projects as a result of receiving this award.
Hongkong Prize recipients are selected by an expert panel composed of distinguished scientists from around the globe. Winners will receive cash awards of US$100,000.00 (Lifetime Achievement Award) and US$50,000.00 (Early Career Contribution Award). They will be honored at a ceremony in Hong Kong. Winning articles will be published in a special edition of “Hong Kong Prize Journal”, as well as receiving a trophy and plaque of recognition. The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Bank of China jointly sponsor this award, making it open to anyone regardless of race, nationality, gender and religion. Only exceptional candidates may win twice within their lifetime; thus ensuring only worthy recipients will receive this prestigious honour.
