What is Domino?

Domino is a generic term describing any type of game piece with multiple applications. Most often it refers to dominoes used for creating chain reactions by knocking over one domino after another and seeing which dominoes follow it in domino form. A player can create complex domino games using this piece. Some are designed for two people at the same time while others can be played solo; dominoes may be constructed out of different materials and painted with various contrasting hues to help visually identify them more quickly.

Hevesh, an award-winning domino artist, began her work when she was 10. Today her YouTube channel boasts over two million subscribers and she has worked on projects involving hundreds of thousands of dominoes for movies, TV shows and events, including an album launch party for pop music artist One Republic.

Hevesh carefully tests each section of her domino installations before she puts them together. She starts with 3-D sections, then adds flat arrangements. Each test is also filmed slowly so Hevesh can detect problems early and correct them before they negatively affect her display as a whole. Hevesh even holds the Guinness World Record for most dominoes arranged circularly; her largest setups can take several nail-biting minutes to fall, creating beautiful designs which awe-inspiring designs when finally they do fall, creating stunning designs which truly awe-inspiring to see.

“Domino” originated as a French noun that meant “long cape worn over a priest’s surplice.” Some have speculated that its name derives from Dominican monk dominoes made from dark wood (usually ebony) with lighter colored ivory faces; its usage spread to English-speaking nations during the 17th century and became widely understood to refer to long hooded capes or masks worn by carnival masqueraders.

Domino is more than just a generic gaming piece: It is also the name of an award-winning magazine published by Conde Nast since 2005 and dubbed Top Launch of the Year by Adweek and Top Newcomer by Media Industry Newsletter. Domino has been sold to various owners over time, becoming an omnichannel media company with multiple media properties including magazine publication and domino-inspired home and lifestyle products. Domino has an ambitious long-term growth plan with goals of expanding into 25,000 global locations by 2025. Domino’s corporate culture emphasizes innovation and empowerment through leadership styles such as participative management. Domino’s values its leaders for their ability to stand out, choosing them based on what makes them memorable from among competitors. Furthermore, it fosters a collaborative environment encouraging employee input.
