What is the HK Prize?

An award for exceptional contributions made in any field may be bestowed as part of an honorific system such as government bodies, universities or private organizations. Prizes such as these can often be highly prestigious and sought after – with well-known ones like the Nobel and Pulitzer prizes often making headlines, while lesser-known but equally worthy awards often remain overlooked.

The Hong Kong Arts Development Awards scheme honors veteran artists while acknowledging the work of up-and-coming arts practitioners. It also acknowledges organizations and patrons that have generously contributed to developing local arts scenes, with an aim of raising public awareness of arts’ importance and encouraging participation in their development.

In 1996, friends and students of Professor John D. Young raised funds in his memory in order to establish an annual prize in his honor. It is given each year to a third-year student with 48+ credits who achieves the highest overall result in History; it includes a cash award of $5,000.

Since 2002, the Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA) has included a category for Best Asian Film; films must satisfy three criteria in order to be entered: they must be directed by a Hong Kong resident director or producer and commercially released within one calendar year of being commercially released in Hong Kong. This has cemented HKFA as the premier international film competition based out of Hong Kong.

SHKS is a professional association dedicated to Hong Kong studies as an academic discipline and as part of China and Asia studies. SHKS works towards building a multi-national, interdisciplinary community of scholars and students interested in understanding Hong Kong’s multiple connections within and impact on contemporary and historical world events by producing and disseminating high quality research on its region.

SHKS is excited to offer the inaugural Global Hong Kong Studies Prize, to be awarded at its 2019 Annual Symposium of the Society for Hong Kong Studies. This prize consists of both an engraved medal and cash award. Submissions from any field addressing Hong Kong’s interconnectedness and significance in world affairs both contemporary and historic are welcome; submission deadline is 15 September 2019.
